Christine
Christine came to ETTI in October 2008 as a volunteer, and now she won't leave. She has been teaching in China since 2004 and started her ESL career in 2000 as a volunteer teacher in Eldoret, Kenya. Currently, she acts as curriculum coordinator and volunteer liaison for ETTI and is pleased as punch to be a part of China's developing alternative education scene.
Mary Ellen
After a 30-year career in the United States as a primary school teacher and planner of health and human services, Mary Ellen retired to a perfect life in the beautiful Adirondack Mountain region of New York State. After about four years when life in Paradise began to feel a bit too tame she applied to Volunteers in Asia for a teaching position in China. She is thrilled to be assigned to ETTI in Shangri-la, one of the most beautiful locations in China. Her students are a joy!
Matt
Matt graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2008 only to find himself in the middle of western China by the end of the year. He spent 2008 in Xining, Qinghai Province as a teacher before he moved to Shangri-la in 2009 to work as a vocational English teacher at ETTI. As he finds western China to be enchanting, he's rather ecstatic about being a part of ETTI. Additionally, Matt enjoys hotpot.
Andrea
Andrea first heard about ETTI when completing a Masters in Chinese at Yunnan Normal University in 2006. After working in education development at the University of Technology, Sydney in Australia, she decided to return to Yunnan to take an active role in ETTI's media, communications and fundraising development. Andrea also has fantasies of developing the first Roller Derby League in China.
Who we are
Founded in 2004, the Eastern Tibet Training Institute (ETTI) is a not-for-profit training center working to improve the livelihoods of remote communities in China's southwest through training-based poverty alleviation programs. ETTI is locally registered as a not-for-profit community school.
What we do
ETTI's flagship program is the Youth Pre-Employment Training Program. This program is designed to help unemployed rural youth find their first job. Participants receive training in languages, computer literacy, basic accounting, customer service and life skills. It also includes an on-the-job training component delivered in partnership with local enterprise.
Where we are
ETTI is located in Shangri-la, formerly Zhongdian in Yunnan province. Map
Our mission
Our goal is to keep expanding our program to offer vocational training to a greater number of China's rural poor across China's south west.
Our vision
With additional support from government and donors, ETTI will be able to help more young people secure alternative livelihoods as the modern economy advances and traditional rural livelihoods become less tenable.
