Improving livelihoods through vocational training

Pema Dorji
Pema is southeastern Tibet's most successful tourism entrepreneur. He is General Manager of the Songtzam Retreat and a chain of upscale boutique hotels in the region. Pema is passionate about creating more opportunities for local youth in the booming tourism industry.
Lama Gatso
Gatso is a Tibetan Buddhist lama from Ganzi Prefecture in Sichuan. Gatso has a large following among Tibetan and non-Tibetan Buddhists. He is founder of the Mercy Fund-a charity which supports education initiatives in Tibetan areas.

Chen Junying
Chen Junying is one of Diqing's leading entrepreneurs. A former banker, Junying manages a corporation with interests in real estate, travel and micro-credit. A long-time supporter of ETI's vocational training programs, Junying serves as an executive board member.

Xu Jianchu
Xu Jianchu is Professor of ethnobotany at the Kunming Institute of Botany and Director of the China Branch of the World Agroforestry Center. Professor Xu is a member of the Indigenous People and Policy Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Ben Hillman
Ben Hillman is Lecturer in Public Policy at the Australian National University's Crawfrod School of Economics and Government. He is also a consultant to the United Nations Development Program. Ben is co-founder of ETTI and chair of the board.

Deng Hongjin
Hongjin is a journalist and editor who has published several books on education and culture in China. She is a passionate advocate of alternative education for underprivileged youth.

ETTI's Mission

(i)    To improve livelihoods in China's western regions by providing free access to specialized vocational educational training; and

(ii)    To influence national and local government approaches to vocational educational training in disadvantaged regions.

ETTI's Strategic Goals

(i)    To develop and expand the range of vocational training programs in accordance with market needs;

(ii)    To expand the reach of training programs to underprivileged communities throughout the wider region;

(iii)    To use success to demonstrate the transformative power of education for remote and disadvantaged communities and to advocate for new approaches to vocational educational training in Western China; and

(iv)    To become a model NGO in Western China
